A thorough study of 20th century Pakistani art, focusing primarily on the decades following the 1947 Partition of the subcontinent. Marcella Nesom Sirhandi explores the major styles, movements and artists and places them in social and political context. A strong European influence is present in the earlier work of the 1950's and 60's, but a stronger sense of style and identity began to emerge from the mid 1970's onwards. Sirhandi's work provides insight and examples into the evolution of creativity that lead to beautiful works of art reflecting a unique culture and experiences.
