"In the following pages, we invite the reader to take a walk in Paris, along the centuries which have fashioned the capital we know today. The route is not strictly topographical nor chronological, but the remains, souvenirs, objets d'art show what the genius proper to Paris has been since 6000 BC, its gift of creativity, its originality, its individuality, this alchemy which has made Paris the 'City of Light'. More than a museum, Carnavalet is a 'house in Paris' in which the knowledge of history emanates from the atmosphere and not from strict teaching methods. The panelling, the cabinet-maker's furniture and familiar objects, the portraits, the knick-knacks have been assembled here to evoke, for each period, the people in history, in artistic life, in the world of politics or in intellectual circles who have taken part in the brilliant influence of the city. Since its foundation in 1927, the Association of the Friends of Carnavalet Museum has contributed to enlarge the collections, year after year, through purchases, gifts or bequests and also through giving unfailing support so that pieces of an ensembles of great interest concerning the history of the capital enter the Museum. With the publication of this fine book with Fragments Editions, the Association contributes to the influence of the Museum, and its is hoped that, once the visit completed, it will bring to the reader an extra delight, a wish to return, perhaps the desire to learn more about the history of the capital, and an even greater love for Paris."
