Philip D Hawkins is one of Britain's foremost railway artists and has been for many years. His paintings have been widely reproduced in many forms, including fine art prints, calendars, and greetings cards, as well as regularly in magazines and books. He was a founder member of the Guild of Railway Artists and the guild's president from 1988 to 1998, when he was made an Honorary Fellow of the field, only the third to be so honoured (following the late Terence Cuneo and David Shepherd).
Hawkins' paintings of steam engines and trains are given a fair viewing in this large format book. His comprehensive commentary on the atmospheric pictures, citing sources, inspiration, and techniques, adds to the enjoyment. The work includes photographs, and extracts from the artist's notebooks.
“All those who appreciate the atmospheric artistry of the railway scene as represented by Philip D Hawkins will find Steam on Canvas a beautifully produced addition to their library.”
