( full title is " Lorna Doone ", by R D Blackmore , read by Ray Brooks )
Set in the Late-17C time of Late-Charles II / Early-James II (especially the Duke of Monmouth's attempt to seize the throne from James , and the bloody response of Judge Jeffreys, "The Hanging Judge", to Monmouth's supporters), "Lorna Doone" is the tale, firstly, of one John Ridd, who later becomes a yeoman of Exmoor ... before this, when he is still a boy, his father is murdered by the Doone clan, a noble bloodline of outlaws, who terrorise the folk Exmoor with impunity.
Two years after the murder, John is rescued from the murderous Doone clan, by young Lorna Doone, who quietly disapproves of her bloodline's criminal ways. When - another several years into the future -, John's uncle swears revenge on the Doones, it is John's turn, to perform a kindly act, as he realises he loves Lorna, and cannot allow her to be harmed.
So begins a dangerous love affair, set amidst the religious, and royal, politics of the Late 17C ...
