This Sceptred Isle : 1660 to 1702 (inc. 24-page booklet & chronology 2 x tapes)

£4.99

Product description

( full title is " This Sceptred Isle 1660 to 1702 : Restoration to Glorious Revolution ", by Christopher Lee , read by Anna Massey , Churchill extracts read by Peter Jeffrey , Additional readings by Stephen Critchlow , Denys Hawthorne & David Hale , Produced by Pete Atkin )

After the death of Oliver Cromwell in 1658, his son Richard soon proved inadequate in the role, of Lord Protector. The Protectorate collapsed, and in 1660, Parliament voted for the return of the exiled King Charles II. His quarter-century reign witnessed the return of the Plague, the Great Fire of London, the birth of political parties, and a great prosperousness in the arts.

Charles was succeeded by his brother James II, whose Catholicism aroused deep-rooted fears of French domination. These fears led to the 1688 revolution when the Dutch Protestant Prince William of Orange, grandson of Charles I, was invited to invade England.

William ruled the country jointly with his wife Mary, the deposed James II's daughter. Their reign saw increasing discontent among the Jacobites in Scotland, and in Ireland a battle whose echoes still resound today : the Battle of the Boyne.

Includes a 24-page booklet and a fold-out chronology (see Photo Two).
Running time : approximately 3 hours.
