( full title is " This Sceptered Isle 55BC to 1087AD : Julius Caesar to William the Conqueror "", by Christopher Lee , narrated by Anna Massey , and featuring extracts from " A History of the English-Speaking Peoples ", by Sir Winston Churchill , read by Paul Eddington )
Britain was at the edge of the known world when, under the Emperor Claudius, the Romans brought to the island of Britannia a sophisticated civilisation that was to last four hundred years. But when the Romans left, that very civilisation left with them, and the centuries that followed are hence known as the "Dark Ages".
However, those "Dark Age" centuries were full of drama and action : They saw the successive invasions by peoples who would transform into the English - Angles, Saxons, Danish & Norwegian Vikings, and finally, The Normans from Northern France, who were themselves mostly remnants of previous Viking colonies.
With these peoples, would emerge their leaders, such as : Alfred the Great ; Athelstan ; Ethelred the Unready ; Canute ; Edward the Confessor ; Harold II ; and, eventually William Duke of Normandy, known now as William the Conqueror.
