Fenland Railwayman

£7.99

Product description

94pp. Very good condition, aged with some slight foxing.

Fenland Railwayman
For forty-seven years Arthur Randell worked as porter, loader and signalman in small railway stations and sidings in the Fens. He compares past and present conditions, and tells of the days when signal lamps were taken out every day and footwarmers had to be heated in a big copper as many of the old carriages had no steam heating. To those of us who object to the sickly fumes of the diesel train his description of steam engines is especially welcome: the drivers had a great love for their engines and treated them with affection and a jealous regard for their wellbeing.
The describes happily the life, and the comings and goings at Waldersea Siding and Magdalen Road in the twenties and thirties, when great horses came from the farms with wagons of fruit to be loaded on to railway trucks and the railways were hard pressed to find rolling stock to carry the goods they received.
