Written in 1667 by Mariana Alcoforado. Towards the end of 1667, Mariana Alcoforado, the Portuguese nun, was deserted by her lover, Monsieur de Chamilly, a young officer in the army of Louis XIV. From her convent in the Portuguese town of Beja she sent these five letters to him in France. They have become known, through their French translations, as some of the most remarkable love letters in the world.

Printed in 1956 the book is in remarkable condition still with its paper dusk jacket. The only damage is browning of the paper along the top edge of the jacket and down the spine. Been very well looked after. Translated by Lucy Norton with an introduction by Raymond Mortimer
