B. I. Centenary 1856-1956

£6.99

Product description

This is a history of the British India Steam Navigation Company, a ship owning and operating company that began life as the Calcutta and Burmah Steam Navigation Company in 1856.  In 1914 the company became part of the P&O Group, but retained its separate identity and organisation until it was finally absorbed by P&O in 1972.  One of the largest ship owners of all time, B.I. owned more than 500 ships and operated 150 more for other owners, with its fleet reaching a maximum size of 160 ships at its height in 1922.  This book covers the history of the company, from its founding to its growth and its ties to the expansion of the British Empire.  It mentions notable ships such as the Gairsoppa, Dara and Uganda, the last serving during the 1982 Falklands War.  Included are a number of photos and illustrations, all in black and white.  The book is in very good condition, with no real external damage to the book itself.  Most of the external damage is done to the dust jacket, which only has some minor tears and staining.  Internally the pages are clean, binding strong and illustrations clear.
