First published in 1954 by Wills & Hepworth, the likely date of this copy is also 1954, a probable first edition.

A Ladybird Senior, series 536. Written by Brian Vesey-Fitzgerald with illustrations by Allen W Seaby.

Like all Ladybird books, some investigation is required to accurately ascertain the true publication date: Indications are that this book was published in 1954:
- Buff-coloured boards with brown lettering and illustration. (earlier than 1965)
- Open-winged butterfly logo. (earlier than 1961)
- Illustrated end papers with brown open-winged ladybird design. (1953-1960)
- Spine lettering runs from bottom to top (earlier than 1959).
- Other books published in this series gives only 2 titles published in this series, with this being the last one.
- Price 2'6.
- Finally the printed date on the back of the front end paper reads 'First published in 1954'

In great condition overall.
There is some light rubbing wear on the top and bottom edges of the dust jacket (which is not price-clipped), with some light marks. there is a small closed tear on the rear end paper.
A former owner's name is neatly written on the front end paper. For each bird a handwritten tick or mark appears next to the title, assumed to denote that a particular species has been seen. Otherwise, the boards and pages are generally clean and have not been annotated.
The binding is sound and still firm.
