This is a quite delightful little book. It was designed as a diary with a space for each day of the year and each containing a quotation from the A. A. Milne 'Winnie the Pooh' books and with illustrations by E H Shepard. There is room for individual insertion of birthdays. The particular appeal of this book is the entries, in a variety of hands, over the years. These vary from a couple of bank employees, a dachshund born 1955 and died 1966, a number with a date of death inserted, aunts, uncles and parents. and one Robert Cozens “Killed in RAF crash in 1944 aged 20”. Generally notes and annotations by hand detract from a book’s worth, but here they hugely, and touchingly, enhance the value.
Methuen hardback with no DJ. Red cloth covered boards with gilt design of Robin with fishing rod on the front and gilt lettering to spine. The covers are worn, stained and somewhat faded, top and bottom of spine, corners and cover edges bumped. The binding is loose but functional with no absent pages. Owner’s name on reverse of front cover, with, below it, a patterned stain. Also foxing/tanning to front and back endpapers. Clearly a well used book.
