The Adventures of Wonk was a short series of 6 volumes, each including 2 stories, originally published between 1941 and 1948. This is volume 3. The collection was written by Muriel Levy, who - beside adapting many works for radio - also played a role as Aunty Muriel on Children's Hour. The book is illustrated by Kiddell-Munroe.
In Fireworks, Wonk and Peter are trying to raise money for Guy Fawkes Night; however, Peter’s money-box is empty. His favourite uncle has joined the Fleet Air Arm, and his uncle Joseph doesn't like noise so won’t consider helping. Wonk thinks it would be a good idea to go carol singing as he’s sure the neighbours would love to hear them sing. The first neighbour they visit offers to give them money but only if they promise to stop singing and go home! The second story, called The Diamond Ring, tells of finding a ring in an ice cream and returning it to its owner.
Although the spine covering is worn completely away, revealing the webbing beneath, and the stitching is loose in places, also the rear board is peeling away from the fixed end paper, and some pages have been affected by damp towards the bottom, all text is clear and the illustrations are charming. This is the 6th edition of a scarce book.
