Impunity Jane

£19.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

Impunity Jane
Rumer Godden
Illustrated by Adrienne Adams
Macmillan & Co Ltd, London, 1955.
Hardback; 140 x 210 mm; light brown boards with titles in blue on spine, and pictorial front cover in blue; 48 pages; illustrated endpapers. Original clipped dust jacket.
The book is in good condition. The binding is sound. The dust jacket is tanned, including internally, with a few closed and open tears, particularly the spine. The covers show some fading. Page ends tanned. The recto of the front free endpaper is annotated in blue ink: “To Cynthia with love from Uncle Dick 1959”.
Rumer Godden (1907 – 1998) was an English author of more than 60 fiction and non-fiction books. Nine of her works have been made into films, most notably Black Narcissus in 1947.
In this children’s book Impunity Jane is a Victorian pocket doll who yearns for adventure. For many years, she waits in a dolls house hoping to be rescued, and surprisingly it is a 7-year-old boy named Gideon who hears her calling and liberates her.
It is a delightful tale that is enhanced by the equally delightful illustrations, in partial colour, by Adrienne Adams. Adams (1906 – 2002) was a children's book illustrator as well as an artist and author of children's books. She won two Caldecott Honors (in 1960 and 1962) and in 1973 she was awarded the Rutgers Award for overall contributions to children’s literature.
