£40.00

Product description

Not Scarlet But Gold: A Lone Pine Adventure
Malcolm Saville
Illustrated by A R Whitear
Newnes, London, 1962; 1st edition.
Hardback; 135 x 190 mm; red boards with gold titles on spine and front cover with a motif of a pine tree; 247 pages, top edge painted red; endpaper maps. Original unclipped dust jacket.
The book is in good condition. The binding is sound though the book is slightly cocked. Some bumping and chipping to the dust jacket, and tanning internally. A small dent on the spine of the dust jacket and the spine of the book underneath. Tanned vertical strip on front (recto) and back (verso) endpapers. Verso of front free endpaper annotated in black ink: “E J Sabin”.
Malcolm Saville (1901–1982) was an English author best known for the Lone Pine series of children's books, many of which are set in Shropshire. His work emphasises location; the books include many vivid descriptions of the English countryside, villages, and sometimes towns.
The fourteenth Lone Pine Adventure, Not Scarlet But Gold, sees the Lone Piners back in Shropshire. As Peter (Petronella) rides across the Long Mynd to meet David and the twins, Jenny and Harriet, she is caught in a thunderstorm at Seven Gates and forced to shelter in a ruined cottage. Here she meets a handsome young man to whom she is instantly attracted, and who asks for help in exploring the country she knows so well. Not Scarlet But Gold is a search for treasure which was hidden in the hills by an enemy 20 years ago.
