The Secret of the Gorge: A Lone Pine Story

£50.00

Product description

The Secret of the Gorge: A Lone Pine Story
Malcolm Saville
George Newnes Limited, London, 1958.
First edition. “Signed for Suzanne by the author Malcolm Saville” on the fly title.
Hardback; 130 x 190 mm; cream boards with titles on spine and front cover with a pine tree pictorial; 255 pages; top edge painted. Maps of the Gorge Country and the Lone Pine Country as endpapers. Original clipped dust jacket.
The book is in good condition although the dust jacket has closed tears and chips. Internally the edges of the jacket and its spine are tanned with a stain at the bottom of the spine. There is some bumping and marking of the boards with very slight tanning along the top. The binding is sound though the book is slightly cocked. There is wear along the top of the recto of the front free endpaper where something appears to have been erased. A pencil “S” on the fly title.
Malcolm Saville (1901–1982) was an English author best known for the Lone Pine series of children's books, many of which are set in Shropshire. His work emphasises location; the books include many vivid descriptions of the English countryside, villages, and sometimes towns.
In The Secret of the Gorge why so many people should want the ugly old sofa, Jenny couldn't imagine. Then Tom suggested they had a good look at it and they found the letter... Somewhere in the gorge, the stolen Whiteflower diamonds were hidden. The Lone Piners had the only clue, but could they discover what it meant before the thieves caught up with them? In this desperate search, the Lone Piners meet some of their most ruthless enemies, and danger piles on danger until the adventure reaches its terrifying climax.
