We Little Ones

£24.99

Product description

The title page states that We Little Ones is by L.H. Apaque, author of A Baker's Dozen etc, and is, 'Published under the direction of the Committee of General Literature and Education appointed by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge'. It was also published by the aforementioned society. The book has a list of contents and there are a number of line illustrations as well as decorations.

The boards are bound in blue cloth with the book title, in a decorative font, embossed in gold at the top of the front. The author's name is at the bottom in black and between this and the title is an illustration of a little girl standing on a chair in order to reach the top of a cupboard. The spine also has the title and author in similar style, but the latter is very faded. At the bottom of the spine is the publisher's logo in black (SPCK). The back is plain apart from the logo in black in the centre. The corners are all bumped and worn away. Furthermore, the board edges, joints and head/tail caps are all worn. The front and back faces have handling marks or stains, with what appear to be blue ink marks on the back. The page edges are faded and uneven.

The front and back endpapers have a decorated pattern and are torn at the hinges, although the binding threads are keeping the boards in position. The inside front endpaper has a small hole in the top left corner and someone has written '10p', in black ink, in the top right. The first title page has a small piece of lined paper glued to the top left corner and a previous owner has written their name in faded ink. Following this is a frontispiece with a lined drawing of 'She lifted me on to a chair', protected by the original tracing paper. All of the front matter section is foxed and marked as is the text block. A number of pages are damaged, including p.11, which has a 65mm dog ear, and p.19, which has a 44mm tear from the fore edge to almost the middle. The Front and back hinges are torn, although still holding, but the binding is broken at pages 144-145.

At the back of the book is a list of publications by the same publisher. This copy of We little Ones would serve as a reading copy.
