Hardbacks; 120 x 205 mm; decorative red boards with titles in gold on spine; volume I: xvii & 470 pages, volume II: xvii & 262 pages; integral cloth bookmarks. No dust jackets but transparent protective covers.

The books are in very good condition, near fine except for a small gauge near the front joint on volume 2.

“’Genius can be bounded in a nutshell and yet embrace the whole fullness of life’. These words of Thomas Mann aptly describe the best of Chekhov’s stories; one of Russia’s quietest and most economical writers, by his deep understanding of human feelings and brilliant use of atmospheric, often symbolic, devices to create mood, he produced in his short stories a portrait of his age no less revealing than those painted by either Turgenev or Tolstoy. But whereas the great novelists were concerned principally with ideas, on the one hand political and social, and on the other moral and philosophical, Chekhov dealt with feelings and moods in all their complexity and unpredictability. His domain was neither mind nor conscience but simply the human heart.” Arnold B McMillin.
