Diary In Duo / Benoite and Flora Groult

£9.99

Product description

The dust jacket is present and generally in very good condition, but has a 1.5 cm tear at the top of the front (see image) and foxing at the edge of the back. The page edges have slight marks and foxing, but internally the pages are clean and tight.

The scene is France during the war and the occupation. In 1940, two young girls of good family, Benoite, aged nineteen, and Flora, aged fifteen, though still pursuing their education, are on the brink of adult life, enjoying the social amenities of their age and position, and looking forward to the ordered pattern of the future. The cataclysm of the German advance, the exodus and the occupation destroys the whole tenor of their present and their future. This book, written in the form of interlocking journals, is the story of the impact of events on two young minds.
though published in France as a novel, "Diary in Duo" is, in fact, closely based on the girls' actual diaries and has an authenticity that gives it an overwhelming sense of reality. Often naive, often immodest, always quick with the vitality and curiosity of youth and its sharp eye for the absurdities of character and situation, the writing has a freshness and spontaneity that makes us free of the secrets of the two young girls, necessarily preoccupied with their lives and the details and difficulties of their domestic life, against the background of the tragedy of events. There is no demand for sympathy here, but it will not be withheld from them. The charm of their often ingenuous self-revelations is apt to touch the heart with a pang of recognition.
