Mainane - Tswana Tales

£12.99

Product description

During eighteen months spent with her husband and small son in the Botswana villages of Manyana and Mankgodi Susheela Curtis was a fascinated listener to the village storytellers. Once she had been accepted as a sincere student of the old tales she was helped to compile a considerable amount of material, much of which was included in her programme on Radio Botswana.
Twenty-eight of these tales appear in this book. They have been meticulously translated, and are sympathetically presented with no attempt to over-polish them. An expert introduction with photographs places them in the context of Setswana life, and this makes it easy for the reader to share this insight into the life and culture of Botswana. Short explanatory notes at appropriate points also help in this aim.
A notable Setswana poet and author, Moabi Kitchin, comments in a foreword, "I hope that in this way our traditions will be understood and appreciated by many people".

Mainane - Tswana Tales by Susheela Curtis. Published by Botswana Book Centre 1975. 70pp. Paperback. Book condition: Fair - some early pages fragile in binding, former owner's inscription to inner front cover, some creasing to cover. Clean throughout.
