Product description

This book is in excellent condition all round. The book contains some black and white illustrations of Albert Lynch. It has a page marker. This Special Edition of Pere Goriot was prepared for subscribers to The Oxford Library of the Worlds Great Books. The Franklin Library has been selected by the Oxford University Press as publishers of The Oxford Library of the World Great Books.

Le Pere Goriot appeared in serial form beginning in December, 1934. It was an instant success and is considered by many to be the best realized novel of Balzac's genius. Its plot is simple: a retired flour merchant is victimized by his love for his two ruthless daughters. who reject his love but take all his money in their effort to elevate themselves in society. They leave him destitute and dying, alone in his boardinghouse room attended only by Rastignac, a young law student who lives there but who also moves in fashionable circles. Rastignac, a pivotal character in the book, observes the heartless treatment of Pere Goriot as well as the hypocrisy of the "fashionable world". '
