In this superb collection of 4 novellas by HE Bates he probes the reality of human love and passion in all its contradiction, variety, squalor and glory. In each of them a man finds himself precariously, dangerously or even fatally under the influence of a woman who, through jealousy, possessiveness, stupidity or sheer calculation, is without scruples, although in the end, regret sometimes steals in. However, as every game of chess is different from every other, however inexorable its moves, just so do these tales differ, moving with suspense and power toward unpredictable outcomes. They offer the reader an absorbing experience.
