The Garden of Earthly Delights

£1.99

Product description

The extraordinary painting, 'The Garden of Earthly Delights', was created by Hieronymus Bosch in the 1530s. This is the story of Bosch's apprentice, the bastard Julius, and of his lifelong quest: to finish Bosch's Hell. Eighteen-year-old Julius is both ordinary and extraordinary: a boy growing up outside his milieu. He suffers the pains of rejection and misunderstanding, glories in the joys of the flesh and searches to fulfil his putative destiny in a time of bloody violence, of mutilation, of fierce light and powerful darkness. Salaman deals with truths both titanic and tiny; with History as the basis of an idea, with Art, and with a Religion of Love counterpointed by the Power of Darkness. Remarkable, and with a rare scope, this is a crackling and compelling story whose people and places glow as realistically today as they ever did four centuries ago. "Good historical novels require a smart angle of attack, some fulcrum by which to move the inert masses of chronological stuff into catchier narrative order, and Salaman has come up with a good one. Crisply efficient and informative. Better still, the thickening of the atmospheric soup is pacey, enticing, carrying the reader briskly and agreeably along." "Unnerving black comic banter." INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY "There is a lot to be said for a well-researched historical novel with an exciting setting and on this count Salaman scores highly." FINANCIAL TIMES "Vivid lyricism." THE TIMES

Oxfam Bookshop Shaftesbury

Our Oxfam bookshop in Shaftesbury is situated at the top of one of Britain's loveliest hills. Gold Hill affords a magical view across the Blackmore Vale and the bookshop lies between it and the old Abbey grounds which date back to 888AD. We can't claim to have manuscripts of that antiquity but we do have an extensive selection of beautiful books from our large children's section through fiction, biography, poetry, classic literature and humour to a fine collection of works on art, sport, cooking and gardening. In addition to this comprehensive and exciting array of books we also carry a large and varied stock of vinyl albums and singles both old and new and a fine stock of classical and popular CDs and DVDs. Our lovely selection of cards for all occasions is also very popular. Staffed predominantly by volunteers we're a friendly and helpful bunch and look forward to seeing even more interested music and book fans soon!
