The Outsider

£120.00

Product description

The Outsider
Albert Camus
Translated from the French by Stuart Gilbert
Introduction by Cyril Connolly
Hamish Hamilton, London, 1946. First UK edition.
First published in France in 1942 as L’Étranger.
Hardback; 125 x 190 mm; light green boards with gold titles on spine; 140 pages. No dust jacket.
The book is in fair condition. The binding is sound. The book is cocked. The covers are stained, grubby, and bumped, and the spine is tanned. The front paste-down endpaper is annotated in blue ink “56192” and “Stephen Powys Marks”. The endpapers are tanned, and there is the impression of something having been written on the recto of the front free endpaper. A couple of marks on the endpapers and a small amount of foxing on the fore edges.
The plot of The Outsider is well known. Its theme and outlook are often cited as examples of Camus' philosophy of the absurd and existentialism, though Camus personally rejected the latter label. The planned first print run of the English translation was 10,000 copies. Although only in fair condition, this is an opportunity to obtain a first edition copy of this important text.
