Westward Ho! or, the Voyages and Adventures of Sir Amyas Leigh, Knight of Burrough, in the County of Devon

£9.99

Product description

Set initially in Bideford in North Devon during the reign of Elizabeth I, 'Westward Ho!' follows the adventures of Amyas Leigh (Amyas Preston), an unruly child who as a young man follows Francis Drake to sea. Amyas loves local beauty Rose Salterne, as does nearly everyone else; much of the novel involves the kidnap of Rose by a Spaniard.

This is a 1903 edition of the novel which was written in 1855. The book has red boards with gilt titles set in a decorative design. The block is quite tight as though unread. Spine ends are bumped with light wear, and corners are worn with a little fraying. Text block edges are slightly dust darkened, with some light water stains and foxing spots. Inside, some front and rear leaves have foxing marks and there are noticeable foxing spots on the edges of several rear pages. There is a frontispiece plus 5 other illustrations by William Rainey, R.I. On the rear of the half-title is a gift dedication written neatly in black ink, dated 1904.
