The Life and Ideas of the Marquis de Sade

£5.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

The Marquis de Sade (1740-1814) is undoubtedly one of the most original thinkers of his own or any other period. The author has written the most comprehensive contemporary study of the life and ideas of this remarkable man. De Sade was a pessimistic revolutionary. While Rousseau and the other forerunners of the American, French and even Russian revolutions assumed that man was "naturally" rational and well disposed, De Sade considered man to be irrational and filled with perverse and destructive desires. He put forth his views in a number of forms, but principally in a series of "philosophical novels" portraying the corruption of power and the gratification of all normally unconscious wishes, interspersed with many analytical discussions on sexual psychology and philosophical and political problems.

Book has cream coloured boards with black lettering to the spine.Pages are clean (except the edges which have heavy foxing and some tanning to the first few and last few pages) and securely bound.Dust jacket has a few tears to the front and spine but is protected by a plastic cover.Printed in 1934, first edition.
