Atlas Des Vikings 789 - 1100

£9.99

Product description

Who were the Vikings - these Scandinavians who swept over the known world of their time and who pushed its limits, in the West as in the East? The timid clerics of our Middle Ages implanted in our collective unconscious images of blood and storms, frightening invincibility and irresistible "colonisations" that nothing can justify, even less to confirm. People of high culture, they were neither shameless looters, nor supermen, nor envoys of Satan, but above all extremely gifted traders. This atlas allows us to understand how exceptional circumstances could have favoured their businesses, and to induce them as against their will to alternate trade and plunder, businesses of durable establishment and long perilous voyages. Mercenaries as much as predators, colonists as much as devastating, they knew how to introduce their qualities of order and organization in Russia (which they founded as a State), as in Normandy or in the Danelaw. It was their "executives" who took control and brought the West to life. Thus, thanks to this book, working tool and fascinating story, we will finally be able to get out of these famous "mists of the North" where we have been sailing for too long, to discover the truth of the "Viking phenomenon" - this adventure which lasted nearly two and a half centuries, and whose geopolitical consequences are still felt today.

French language edition. Excellent pages, a little edge an cover wear.
