Bach and the Dance of God

£14.99

Product description

This is the first, and self-sufficient part of a two-volume study of Bach and Beethoven as religious composers. This volume concerns Bach.

Wifrid Mellers argues that although virtually all the composers of Bach's time believed in and employed musical conventions that reflected an autocratic world, Bach himself was a believer in a different and fundamentally religious sense. For Bach, all music was a 'harmonious euphony for the glory of God' and the instruction of his neighbour. This, as Professor Mellows shows, made a vital difference to Bach's treatment of the fashionable conventions of his day, which were dominated by the opera house and the dance.

The book has a dust jacket which has been price clipped and shows some signs of shelf wear and rubbing. There are some tiny tears to the edges of the dust jacket. There is a name and date written on the front free end paper. Internally, the pages are clean and the binding is tight.
