Cartas del viaje de Asturias (Cartas a Ponz) - Travel letters from Asturias (Letters to Ponz)

£8.99

Product description

Please note: The text of this book is in Spanish.

Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos (1744 – 1811) was a Spanish neoclassical statesman, author, philosopher and a major figure of the Age of Enlightenment in Spain. Amongst other things, he wrote a most interesting set of diaries or travel journals (1790–1801, first published in 1915) reflecting his trips across Northern Spain.

This edition of the Jovellanos Asturias Travel Letters is not intended to be one of the traditionally called Letters to Ponz. What makes it unique is that, far from being destined for the general public and more specifically for Jovellanos scholars and fans, it seeks in this case a young reader, a student of Spanish Language and Literature, who will read it as an object of study and comment.

Due to their thematic variety, rich content and accessible style, these letters "with the pertinent indications or comments of the teacher" can mark a hopeful milestone in the estimation that young students have of historical reading, while increasing their "probably" »Precarious knowledge of Asturian culture in several of its many manifestations. Complementary to the large private Jovellanist epistolary, the Asturias Travel Letters reflect the look of the enlightened one who not only sees what he is but also what he could be. Jovellanos will constantly describe reality and draw another possible, better dimension, and the necessary reforms to achieve it. We thus notice the full awareness that the identity of Asturias is not only its indicative present and its past, but also the conditional future. The country of the enlightened is more what it wants to be than it is, because the country has ceased to be "the place of the parents", to become the project of the future "the place of future generations."

The book is in excellent condition throughout.
