Cholera in Sunderland

£6.99

Product description

"In the uncharacteristically mild winter of 1831-32 there occurred in the Sunderland the first outbreak of cholera in the British Isles. it is a most dubious 'honour' to have been selected to be the initial point of entry to the country for the most notorious disease to have affected Victorian Britain.

Nevertheless since Sunderland does have relatively few 'firsts' to its credit this is one which should not be discarded too readily. looked at on the brighter side it was the shock top the Victorian society of the impact of this particularly dramatic killer which finally produced the first steps towards reform of public health in the towns and cities of Britain, and the start of progress towards a healthier environment for working people which led eventually to the creation of the welfare state"
