Elizabeth of the sealed knot

£19.99

Product description

Elizabeth, Countess of Dysart, the subject of this biography, was suspected of spying by both Royalists and Parliamentarians at the time of the English Civil War. She was known to be confidante (possibly mistress) of Oliver Cromwell. Her home was a centre of intrigue where she indulged her passion for secret codes. The author, Doreen Cripps, herself a cipher expert, has here succeeded in breaking many of the codes use in Elizabeth's correspondence with her co-conspirators. This hardback edition retains its illustrated dust cover, though this is somewhat worn along the edges. The boards themselves are clean and sound. The pages are clean, but have yellowed with age.
