This book gives a detailed account of the development of education in India from the 16th Century to the 1960s. Chapters include Anglicisation of Education (1835-1853), From Wood’s Despatch to Hunter Commission (1854-1881), From Dyarchy to Independence (1940-1947), Education in Free India, Professional and Vocational Education. It includes biographical notes on influential people, a list of significant dates, statistical tables, diagrams and a useful bibliography. There are a number of black and white pictures of individuals, including Raja Rammohan Roy, William Carey, Drinkwater Bethune, Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar, Sir Ashutosh Mukerji and Gandhi. The author was Head of the Departments of Educational Administration and Foundation of Education at the National Council of Educational Research Training in Delhi.

The binding and pages are in very good condition. There is a University of Birmingham bookplate on the front endpaper and a small, round stamp on the title page. A previous price has been neatly written in a corner of the next page. The text has been marked in some places, lightly done in biro.
