Lady Mary Coke - Letters and Journals 1756-1774 (4 Volumes)

£95.00

Product description

Lady Mary Coke was the youngest daughter of John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyll, and his second wife, Jane Warburton, maid of honour to Queen Anne (the last monarch of the Stuart Dynasty) and Caroline, Princess of Wales (the wife of the future King George II). Married to Edward Coke in 1747, they separated but remained married until his death in 1753 when Mary was 26. Never remarrying, Mary instead set out on a life of independence that became 'marked by gossip, travel, devotion to royalty and self-imposed misadventure'. Although her letters and journals were never intended for publishing, they first were in 1889 by a distant great-nephew and offer a unique and interesting viewpoint of society and politics in the late eighteenth century. The first edition published 100 sets between 1889 ad 1896, while this is one of a facsimile edition limited to 500 sets printed in 1970. This is a collection of 4 volumes. The books are in good condition, with most signs of wear being limited to the dust jackets, which show minor wear on the edges and some chipping on the spine. Internally the books have clean pages, strong binding and no loose pages.
