The author writes in his preface:-
"History comes home to you in the Fort where it was created. It was abode of Kings and Queens. Everything about it is subjected to sublime glorification, its air, walls, pillars, columns, chambers, chaste marble decoration and what not. Its Palaces and Dalans were trod by sandals of princes and emperors. It is awful and amazing, seen but no longer felt. It has seen passion, love and more human savagery than any other place in the sub-continent. Its beauty and grandeur cannot be exaggerated. It retains its ancient glory in speaking terms with relation to the nobility and commoners. It is here that reality, miracle and illusion all tumble around together where a lovely touch of madness remains unconquered and uncomprehended. The Lahore State being a breadbasket in sub-continent the tribals swept down from the north constantly downing old kingdoms and creating new ones, every now and then, for the last many centuries. Defiant, and exorbitant at times, it continued to make history in various periods."
