Product description

MILITARY HISTORY

2 BOOK BUNDLE.

Includes: Soviet Air Force Fighters (part 2) and Artillery : The Big Guns Go To War

SOVIET AIR FORCE FIGHTERS (part 2) - During the initial phases of the assault on the Soviet Union by Germany's Wehrmacht, the Luftwaffe enjoyed almost total dominance in Russian skies. Fighter opposition from the Soviet Air Force was strictly limited; the majority of the fighters were flown with a singular lack of aggressiveness. The fighter element of the Soviet Air Force had been caught at a critical time: it was immersed in a re-equipment programme and the defects that were being revealed by its hurriedly manufactured and inadequately developed new equipment were being compounded by the limitations of pilot conversion training. But the ascendancy of the Luftwaffe was destined to be short lived. The Soviet Air Force and Soviet fighter designers learned rapidly and in a remarkable short space of time the Luftwaffe found itslef opposed by competently flown fighters, which, if less sophisticated than those of the other major combatants, were nevertheless extremely capable and available in considerable quantities...

ARTILLERY : THE BIG GUNS GO TO WAR - This superbly presented book tells the story of the big guns and their rapid development over the past one hundred years. The evolution of modern artillery pieces is traced from the muzzle-loaders of the Crimean War (1853 - 1856) to the rocket and tube artillery duels of today's battlefields. Superbly illustrated throughout in colour and black and white, there are informative battle and campaign maps and detailed diagrams describing how guns work and how they were used in a wide range of situations - from the trenches of World War 1 to the Pacific island defences devised by the Japanese.
