‘Mixed Fortunes: Memories of Country Life in Leicestershire and Yorkshire’ by William Astens Hayward.

£2.99

Product description

This booklet tells the life story of William Hayward, the son of a farmworker, who was born in Ashby Magna, Leicestershire in 1908. His first job was in a shoe factory, but he soon changed to farm work. Living in Leicestershire and Yorkshire he went on to establish and run a series of rural businesses, working as a firewood seller, gravedigger, bus driver, farmer and shopkeeper. In 1952 he bought a farm at Thorpe-in-Balne, near Doncaster.

Hayward became an active member of the Conservative Party and served as an association secretary and a delegate to the National Conference. This book gives insights into the nature of rural life and how it changed in the 20th Century. It also shows something of the working of the Conservative Party at a local level. The illustrations include photographs of Hayward with Nigel Lawson and with Margaret Thatcher. The book has been signed by the author. Illustrated with black and white photographs.
