Oriental Rugs: Volume 1 Caucasian

£35.00

Product description

376 pages including index. Green boards with bright gilt tile on front board and on spine. A few scratches on front board. Top of spine gently bumped. Pages are glossy, clean and free of any markings. Pages 237 to 248 have come away from the binding but are still present. Text accompanied by lovely black and white and colour photographs. Dust Jacket present. Light crinkling along top of the jacket with two 1 cm closed tears along the top. Tape applied (by previous owner) to inside spine and inside flaps of dust jacket and has yellowed with age

'Caucasian rugs with their warm natural colours and their strong designs are a common sight in discriminating homes throughout the world. Used with modern or antique furniture the good Caucasian rug, whether worn or not, adds a new dimension of luxury to a home.

As the heart of a rug lies in its colour, it is essential to provide as many colour illustrations as possible. The fact that this book provides more full coloured example than in the rest of specialist literature put together gives it a head start.

Unlike some previous books on the subject, the aim has been to avoid showing solely the superb museum specimens that only millionaires can afford. Sumptuous eighteenth century specimens may be mouthwatering but they do nothing to help the modern collector or home furnisher understand the pieces he sees round him in the market place. So this book illustrates the examples that appear at auctions and in the shops of dealers. It is important too that the illustrations show, wherever possible, varying degrees of quality so the reader can learn to attune his eye- surely the key to the appreciation of any subject. The author discusses possible dates and areas of production, giving reasons for his own conclusions but also for his rejections of the ideas of others.' (Information taken from inside of dust jacket)
