This anthology, published in 1942 is a collection edited by M. J. Tambimuttu of the best poems written since the beginning of the war, some of which are also 'war poems'. While some of the poets such as Herbert Read, Stephen Spender and George Barker were already well known, the majority were members of a younger generation not yet known to the general public. The poets include Dylan Thomas, Gavin Ewart, Mervyn Peake, Henry Treece, Kathleen Raine and Lawrence Durrell. Most of the poets had previously contributed to Mr Tambimuttu's magazine, but many poems had not previously appeared in print.
