Prescot churchwardens' accounts, 1635-1663

£8.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

Book in great condition, no markings or writings. Tear in top corner of dust jacket.

"Prescot's churchwardens' accounts from 1635-1663 chart a tumultuous 30 years in the life of this large Lancashire parish and its region. Detailed here are Laud's reforms of parish churches and worship and the puritan reaction which followed. Here, too, is a story of bloody civil conflict, of famine and of plague in the most troubled years from 1642. then, as this chapter closes, comes the quiet and joyful return to older ways, when the puritan commonwealth at last collapsed. through all the vicissitudes of these 30 turbulent years the parish had continued to be administered, the church repaired and the poor relieved. great credit must surely go to the succession of churchwardens whose labours are displayed here and who somehow made it happen. It is hoped that this edition will be of value to academics, to family historians and to the more general reader. "
