Stone Blocks and Iron Rails: Tramroads

£30.00

Product description

Most people imagine the history of railways started with the Stockton and Darlington railway or a little earlier. In fact railways in their wooden form date back to the early 17th century. This book picks up the story as wooden rails began to be replaced by metal. Hence the title of the book.

The book has several sections. The main text covers the history of the rise and fall of these horse drawn railways. It covers the features of the railways and discusses the traces that remained at the time of writing. A second section contains a bibliography including both lists of books and maps. A third section contains a gazetteer of all known lines built before 1830 in the UK. There are hundreds of lines amounting to about 1,500 route miles.

This book is one of the two essential pre Stephenson railway history books, the other being Lewis' "Early Wooden Railways".
Ex-library copy with usual stickers & markings. Internally in good condition. Dust jacket intact, with slight bumping at corners.
