The Armorial of Sir David Lyndsay of the Mount (Volumes 1 & 2)

£100.00

Product description

Sir David Lyndsay of the Mount (c1490-c1555) was a Scottish herald who in 1542 produced a roll of arms known today as the Lyndsay of the Mount Roll, containing over 400 Scottish coats of arms and forming the basis of the official Scots heraldry register that is in use today. The first volume gives a briefing to the reader; providing a context for the armorial and the time period in which it was made by looking at the reign of King James V of Scotland, the life of Sir David, the role of heralds and the status of arms, along with the purpose and a description of the armorial. It then looks at
other artists and authors who added to the armorial at a later date before looking at certain aspect of the heraldry, such as the use of central shields and the imperial crown. It then looks at families that while mentioned in the armorial have now become extinct, as well as the landholdings and wealth of some of the Lairds listed. The rest of Volume One is then taken up by scanned pages from the armorial made by Sir David (Pages 81-346), and followed by an appendix. Volume Two then provides and overview and commentary on the folios in Volume One, followed by a bibliography and index.
