Malta had for long been a major base of the Royal Navy in the Mediterranean but with the upsurge of Italian power in the early 1930s, its close proximity to the numerous air bases in Sicily and Italy, the fact that it was outflanked to the south by Italian Libya and the strength of the rebuilt Italian navy, it was felt by 1940 that it was untenable in modern war.

The book has red boards and silver lettering to the spine.

The upper and lower edge of the spine has mild bumping.

The dust jacket is in good condition.

The dust jacket has foxing on the inside.

The upper and lower edge of the spine of the dust jacket has bumping and wear and tear.

The upper outer corners of the front and rear of the dust jacket have bumping and wear and tear.
