The Book of Edinburgh Anecdote

£3.49 Out Of Stock

Product description

‘The Book of Edinburgh Anecdote’, published in 1912, was written by the author Francis Watt (1849-1927). For this book Watt collected numerous interesting and amusing stories about famous characters associated with Edinburgh, ranging from Burke and Hare to Miss Jean Elliot, supposedly, “The last Edinburgh lady who kept a private sedan chair in her ‘lobby’”. The chapters include Artists, Surgeons and Doctors, Royalty, Men of Letters, The Supernatural, The Women of Edinburgh, and The Streets. It is illustrated with reproductions of portraits of many of the characters mentioned.
The first chapter is on ‘Parliament House and Lawyers’ and Watt introduces it by stating, “The Parliament House has always had a reputation for good anecdote. . . . . So there is a great mass of material. Let me present some morsels for amusement or edification”.
Watt was a lawyer and writer who also contributed articles for the 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica and the Dictionary of National Biography. He became a friend of Robert Louis Stephenson, of whom he wrote a biography.

This copy is a hardback in grey paperboards with brown cloth. It is well preserved, with the text and cover in good condition but showing minor signs of wear and tear, mainly to the corners of the boards. The pages are uncut. The illustrations are in very good condition. The front free end paper has a bookplate indicating that the book was a prize for a student of Dumbarton Academy for the session 1921-22. This is not an ex-library copy.
