The Japanese Enlightenment: a study of the writings of Fukuzawa Yukichi. SIGNED.

WAS £29.99 £14.99

Product description

SIGNED dedication by the author on the ffep, title page also signed. Used very good condition, no dj, shelf wear and fading to boards, pencil notes (some in Japanese) on many pages. Number 10 in the University of Cambridge Oriental publications series.

If Japan was to avoid the humiliating fate which had befallen India and China at the hands of the West she needed large guns, large ships, and a social organisation other than the system of feudalism which had existed during previous centuries. Fukusawa (1835-1901), one the most comprehensive exponents of the doctrines of the Enlightenment, explained clearly the need for a new basic discipline, a new scheme of values, a new practical morality in ordinary life, a new view of the past and its influence on the specious present and a new theory of political obligation.
