The Royal Deeside Line

£9.99

Product description

158pp. Good condition, dust cover is damaged but protected from further damage with a non adhesive plastic covering. Signs of foxing along edges.

The Royal Deeside Line
Of all British branch lines few can be so well known -even if only by name- as that which ran along Royal Deeside from Aberdeen to Ballater. Through both its natural beauty and connections with the Royal family, Deesdie has become one of Scotland's best-loved tourist centres and the railway that followed the course of the Dee provided a journey of exceptional scenic attraction. Now that the line has been closed this book -based on original research- looks back on its colourful past.
Its History is related from its hesitant beginnings, through the storms that accompanied its changes of ownership, the rise and fall of suburban and excursion series, to the final closure. The first complete railway in Aberdeenshire, it carried up to seventy-one trains a day at the height of its popularity, including the unique King's Messenger trains, and was once, according to tradition, the owner of a locomotive painted in Royal Stuart tartan. Through six reigns the Royal family regularly travelled to and from Balmoral on the railway, and other notable passengers included Nicolas II, the last Czar of all the Russias. The last trains ran in December 1966.
