Three Volumes on the Double Bass

£395.00

Product description

Three Volumes on the Double bass; Introduction to the double bass, More about the double bass, and Looking at the double bass. Published in 1960 (1971 reprint), 1963 (1969 reprint); and 1967 (first edition) respectively.

Elgar was clearly obsessed with his instrument. He describes himself as having played “ Bass for many years in Orchestra, Pit and Dance band circles”. But over and above his musical skills (and he was highly rated for these) he also undertook extensive research which, over some seven years, produced these three books. They provide a very well regarded background to the history and production of this instrument.

All three books were published by the author, all are the same size and all have good binding and no marks (apart from a pencil drawing on the last end papers in “more about”- Vol.2.) They all have maroon cloth covered boards with gilt lettering to spine and front. There is slight mottling of the lower 3 cm of the spine covers of the first and third volumes, but other than this their condition is excellent.

Vol.1. Introduction is sub titled “A description of the History and construction with miscellaneous information for players and others”. 120 pages. There are several black and white illustrations together with some line drawings. Tipped in black and white picture of a sculpture by Ancillotti frontispiece.

Vol.2 The subtitle reads “A description of the instrument with general and technical information regarding selection, playing, adjusting and repairing together with biographies of some famous players”. 152 pages.
Again with black and white illustrations – a frontispiece of an engraving of Dragonetti by Bartolozzi. There are also some line drawings.

Vol 3. The subtitle reads “A reference dictionary of double bass makers of the world including the Italian classical makers with 59 pages of illustrations of important bass instruments”. 214 pages. The pictures are in black and white and include some close ups. The frontispiece is a picture of a double bass storeroom with many instruments.

These little books are much sought after and command considerable prices when sold individually. We are fortunate to be able to offer the three together and in good condition.
