Two Cheers for Democracy - Forster, E M

£9.99 Out Of Stock

Product description

Two Cheers for Democracy is the second collection of essays by E. M. Forster, published in 1951, and incorporating material from 1936 onwards.

Reflecting Forster's increasing politicisation in the 1930s, particularly in the first section entitled 'The Second Darkness', the collection contains versions of his anti-Nazi broadcasts of 1940, as well as his defence of individualism as “a liberal who has found liberalism crumbling beneath him” in the face of the rise of totalitarianism.

'Essays that applaud democracy's toleration of individual freedom and self-criticism and deplore its encouragement of mediocrity: "We may still contrive to raise three cheers for democracy, although at present she only deserves two." '

Book is in very good condition overall, minus its dust jacket. Cover has some staining (including coffee cup ring) and spine is faded. Inside binding is sound throughout. Tanning inside covers and on first free end pages. Print is clear throughout with no markings. Owner's name written inside front cover.
