Undercover University

£8.99

Product description

This is the story of how a few determined young men defeated their captors by founding their own university in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp for British officers. Under Japanese regulations prisoners were forbidden to teach, to learn, to compile or possess notes on any subject whatever, or to meet in groups for discussion. The penalty for disobedience was imprisonment or death. And yet they established their classes in seven modern languages, history, public speaking, and a number of other subjects ranging from navigation to pig-farming.

The author's account of these experiences is not what most readers would expect of prison camp recollections. It was not his purpose, nor in his nature, to paint a searing picture of day-to-day life. He does, however, emphasise the debilitating hunger of the last year, which drained his and his companions' will to continue their activities.

Those activities are what this book is about and what gives it its unique interest. It is the story of a personal initiative carried forward with extraordinary resourcefulness and determination, which gave purpose and hope to the lives of those he inspired in the face of the most discouraging conditions.

This book is in excellent condition throughout.
