U.S. wartime aid to Britain 1940-1946

£15.00 Out Of Stock

Product description

American economic aid is seen as having been a vital factor in enabling Britain to win the Second World War. Whilst Lend-Lease did keep the British war effort alive, the arrangement was always of great friction between the two countries. The Americans used Lend-Lease to manipulate the British economy by the imposition of strict controls and by limiting British dollar reserves to one billion. The postwar British economy was left in such a feeble state that it was unable to resist the American demand for liberalisation. This important book is the first academic study of American wartime aid to Britain. The author argues that although Lend-Lease solved Britain's wartime supply problems, the price was the acceptance of a series of burdens which seriously aggravated her long-term economic decline. Wear at dust jacket edges; small tear at top of left inside flap.
