'In presenting herewith yet another volume dedicated to the glories of Versailles, it has not been our intention to add, to those already existence, yet another guide-book or illustrated catalogue, sketching in brief outline the history of the palace and enumerating the architects, painters and landscape designers of whose composite effort Versailles is the outcome. Rather has it been our aim to produce a volume wherein, by combination of word and photograph, the spirit is evoked which lies, as a motivating force, at the foundation of this unique and gigantic creation, the spirit of which the tangible reality of stone and metal and water and tree is the expression. Drawing our inspiration from Balzac, we aim, as he did, no'to limit ourselves to a mere parade of facts, as though demonstrating the carefully numbered bones of a skeleton,' but 'to attempt to reproduce the spirit of an age and bring to life historical facts.'
Does not comes with book sleeve, French/English text throughout the book. Some marks on the front cover, the text on the spine is faded and some slight rubbing to the corners.
