£9.99

Product description

With the 1905-6 and 1907 Supplements and Price Lists in German and English
Christopher Wilk, introduction
Dover Publications Inc, New York, 1980.
Paperback; 240 x 310 mm; x, IV, & 154 pages.. Approximately 1700 illustrations in monochrome. No dust jacket.
The book is in very good condition. The binding is sound. There are a few marks on the covers, and very slight bumping, particularly the corners, and chipping. There are a few marks on the edges of the leaves visible when the book is closed.
In 1830 the German cabinetmaker Michael Thonet began experimenting with the process of bending wood to form various chair parts. He was soon turning out entire chairs made in this fashion. The furniture company Thonet founded in 1853 with his five sons became the largest mass producer of furniture in the world.
The introduction by furniture expert Christopher Wilk outlines the fascinating history and background of the firm up to the time of the catalogue’s publication.
Surviving examples of his furniture are eagerly sought out by collectors. This unabridged reprint of the celebrated 1904 edition of Thonet’s catalogue is therefore invaluable in identifying and authenticating vintage Thonet bentwood.
